Some say that St. Jude’s remarkable effectiveness as an intercessor comes from his special Christian zeal and his amiable, kind heart (his nickname, Thaddeus, literally means “Great-Hearted”). There is also a common story, perhaps legendary, but perhaps not, that for centuries, Christians avoided invoking St. Jude for fear that they would accidentally invoke the name of Judas Iscariot. Because of this undeserved slighting, with so few people asking for his prayers, St. Jude is said to be especially eager to help anyone who comes to him. As he was treated as an outcast and a forgotten cause among the communion of saints, St. Jude is especially compassionate and eager to help outcasts and lost causes.

Perhaps most importantly of all, Jesus Christ himself, in a private revelation to St. Bridget of Sweden, encouraged us to seek the intercession of St. Jude:

"With the purity of his heart, he will undoubtedly conquer the devil."

In modern Catholic culture, devotion to St. Jude has experienced a renaissance, with the apostle becoming one of the most popular and frequently-invoked intercessors of our time. St. Jude’s special help is frequently sought by those with terminal illnesses, irreconcilable differences with family or spouses, and other seemingly impossible causes. He is also the patron saint of hospitals, cancer research, St. Petersburg, Florida, and the Chicago Police Department.
