| | At the young age of 8, Kateri said she wanted to dedicate her life to God, and growing up she learned more about the Christian faith through a Jesuit missionary. At the age of 21, Kateri was baptized and received First Holy Communion on Christmas day in 1677. After this, she was rejected by her community, but traveled to Montreal, Canada to join a community of Native American women who had also converted to Christianity. | | | | St. Kateri continued to live out her faith; she took a vow of virginity at the age of 23, practiced extremely severe fasting, and would pray often in the woods finding God’s presence in her environment. She died on April 17th, 1680, and became canonized in 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI, becoming the patroness of Native Americans, the environment, and more. St. Kateri Tekakwitha, pray for us! |
