Did you know how Saint Nick became known as Santa Claus?
| Happy Feast of St. Nicholas! Today, we celebrate the Feast of St. Nicholas, whose life marked the beginning of the tradition of Santa Claus. Born in a small village in Asia Minor, Nicholas took to heart Jesus' gospel instruction to "sell what you have and give to the poor." He used his money to help the sick and needy, and became known for his generosity. On popular story about his service recounts the time he delivered money to the hearth of a poor family whose daughters were going to be sold into slavery to save them from such a fate - this account eventually leading to traditions of Santa Claus as the gift-giver we know today. Nicholas also was a bishop, and suffered much during the Roman persecution of Christianity, including imprisonment. He died in 343, and his feast is celebrated on December 6th, usually marked with the giving of presents. | | | | | | | |
