| Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli entered minor seminary at the young age of eleven. On August 10, 1904 he received ordination to the priesthood in Rome. Pope Pius XI appointed him apostolic visitor to Bulgaria in 1925 in which he was consecrated Archbishop. In 1953, Pope Pius XII made him a cardinal and Patriarch of Venice at the age of 72. On October 28, 1958, Cardinal Roncalli was elected Roman Pontiff. As pope, he chose the name John after his father and the two patrons of the St. John Lateran Cathedral: John the Apostle and John the Baptist. Pope John XXIII then set into motion his three objectives: 1) A Diocesan Synod, 2) The establishment of a commission to revise canon law, 3) An Ecumenical Council. He wished to work for Christian unity and "aggiornamento" (renewal) to bring the Church up to date. |
