Hi Friend,

This month we have said some goodbyes to members of staff who have contributed greatly to Carbon Co-op, and we wish Sophie Norton and Laurence Young all the best with their future adventures!

We have also been excited to start the building work in the Levenshulme Area Based Scheme. With works expected to be finished in the early winter this is going to be a busy autumn and we are excited to see the project progress. You can learn more about the project and what is involved in this latest update from Helen Grimshaw.

September's EcoHome Lab, taking place next week will host Colin Meek of RB&M who will be presenting his latest work on UK in-situ heat pump performance in an online session. Make sure to sign up!

We wrapped up a series of workshops in collaboration with researchers from the University College London (UCL). These workshops brought together various members and supporters through a game-like exercise based on the concept of a collective 'shared battery'. If you want to learn more about this project, its findings, and even add to our findings we will be hosting an in person EcoHome Lab in October.

NEXT WEEK EcoHome Lab: In-situ heat pump performance in the UK

We are very pleased to host Colin Meek of RB&M who will be presenting his latest work on UK in-situ heat pump performance. Colin's review of the latest Ofgem Data (2017–2022) is currently pending publication by DESNZ and follows on from his previous analysis of domestic installations in over 2,000 homes (2021).

While we regularly spotlight high-performing, specialist heat pump installations, as the sectors moves beyond the early adopters this is a good opportunity to calibrate the overall level of performance being achieved.

We all want warmer, comfier, greener homes with lower bills but sometimes it seems the options are either to stump up a load of cash for an expensive consultant and builder or go with a retrofit council scheme where you get little choice on how it turns out – but might there be a third way? One where we take control and figure out a way to improve our houses together?

In this article we introduce our collective retrofit project in Levenshulme, South Manchester, where building work has started on upgrading five terraced homes in neighbouring streets.

OCTOBER: EcoHome Lab - UCL research on neighbourhood-scale batteries

Carbon Co-op has been working with researchers at University College London (UCL) on a project on shared neighbourhood batteries.

Many members and supporters have recently come together to take part in workshops using specially designed shared battery game created to help participants think about whether and how shared batteries might be made to work effectively for them.

In this in person Ecohome Lab meetup taking place on October 10th at our offices in Ancoats, Georgia Panagiotidou and Mike Fell from UCL will talk about what the work involved, share early findings, and listen to your feedback.
