Battalion Update & CNMR | Capt. Vanderford
Saturday, second phase finished their 5th and final day of work in Metro Detroit in response to the flooding several weeks ago. They have had many good opportunities to interact with homeowners as well as other volunteers. The leadership team tells me that the men have generally been doing very well on the trip. Sunday, they drove to Oak Brook for their chain saw practicals. They should return to campus on Friday evening, September 3.

The Caleb Nelson Memorial Race will take place this Saturday, September 4. Weigh-in will begin at 7:00 AM and the race will begin at 7:30. We'd love to have any staff men who would like to participate. A sign-up sheet will be in the Dining Room beginning today. No sign-ups after Friday supper. If you would like to help with race support, please contact SMaj Moody. And as always, the more spectators, the merrier. It adds a lot of energy and encouragement to the race for the men running.
Leadership Corner
Below are very simple yet powerful ways to make strides in our journey as leaders:

1. Get in the habit of asking for input. Leaders don't ask one simple question enough: How can I be better? Many times, your employees and peers will point things out to you that aren't even on your radar.

2. Listen to the input--don't debate it. Once you ask for input, fight every urge to give your opinion and to instead listen intently. Whatever feedback you get, take notes, say thank you, don't judge, and don't make too many promises.

3. Follow up. This is where you act on what you promised. The key to making change is that you have to follow up and stick with it.
