#WeChooseReuse Campaign Updates

The reuse revolution is underway. Thanks to the support of the NGOs, businesses, cities, and individuals who have signed our commitment and open letters, together we are making reuse a reality in Europe!

We have an exciting year ahead for the #WeChooseReuse campaign. That's why we want to keep our supporters and partners up-to-date with the latest news and campaign highlights. Find out more from our first-ever Campaign Updates mailing, below!

#WeChooseReuse Meet with the European Commission

Over two separate meetings in January and February, #WeChooseReuse met with Virginijus Sinkevicius (Commissioner on Environment, Oceans and Fisheries) and Frans Timmermans (Executive Vice President of the European Commission) to discuss the challenges that businesses and local authorities face when implementing reuse solutions.

We shared the journey the #WeChooseReuse campaign has made over its first year and discussed the role the EU can play in scaling up and driving the transition to reuse systems.

Policy updates

Will 2022 be the year we see PPWD revisions published?

Throughout the first half of 2022, we are going to keep our eyes open and ears to the ground as the European Commission is expected to propose its revision of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive on 20 July 2022.

The revision of this Directive will set forward conditions to put packaging on the EU market. It will provide a great opportunity to reduce packaging and help the EU transition to reusable packaging. We are advocating for the Directive to include overall binding packaging reduction and reuse targets - our recommendations for these can be found here.

Once proposed, the revision of the Directive will be discussed and amended by the European Parliament and the Council (i.e. Member States).

Demands for PPWD revisions raised by five EU countries

In light of the expected revisions to the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive, Austria, Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Sweden called on the European Commission (EC) to make ‘ambitious and circular’ revisions of the PPWD.

A joint letter from the five countries strongly urges the EC to introduce reuse targets for specific product groups and asks the EC to seek harmonization across EU Member States on issues such as waste collection and consumer information.

Coming up in 2022

World Refill Day is back!

The global movement to champion refill and reuse returns on 16 June 2022 and this year it’s going to be bigger than ever. This is your chance to be part of the global refill revolution!

In 2021 World Refill Day launched with activities in 77 countries around the world, reaching almost 200 million people. Together we got reusables back on the menu during the pandemic and celebrated the amazing organisation around the world taking action.

Check out the 2021 impact report here and contact the team at City to Sea to register your interest for this year’s campaign.

Signature handover to the EU

The campaign is planning to hand over the citizens’ petitions as well as the business and cities letters to EU decision-makers in September. Watch this space to keep updated.

Further the Action

Spread the word

Help us multiply the impact of the campaign and get as many signatures by September! Raise the topic of reuse with your decision-makers, but also with your local shops and retailers to bring change at the local and national level. Download the Refill app and find out where you can eat, drink and shop with less waste.

Become a certified Zero Waste City

For cities who have signed the letter and are wondering what they can do next, or for any municipality wishing to engage their community to reduce waste and GhG emissions generated locally, then the Zero Waste Cities Certification is the natural next step.

The Mission Zero Academy hosts the world's-first certification for municipalities who want to become a zero waste city, whilst also being meaningfully rewarded and celebrated for their best practices.

Contact MiZA here to start your journey to becoming a Zero Waste Certified City!
