| Global plastic-free campus victories! Big wins in Philippines and the U.S.
Silliman University is the first plastic-free campus in the Philippines! School officials led by its president Dr. Betty Cernol McCann signed #breakfreefromplastic’s Plastic Free Campuses Declaration envisioning a plastic-free future for the university. Similarly, on the other side of the Pacific, the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) also announced a phase-out of single-use plastics on campus! |

| | In case you missed it, Coca-Cola announced they will continue producing single-use plastic bottles – even though they are ranked as the number one polluter in #breakfreefromplastic brand audits for 2 years in a row – claiming “consumers still want them.” In reaction to the announcement, the Plastic Pollution Coalition has launched a petition calling on Coca-Cola to stop producing single-use plastic bottles!

| | German groups demand a way out of the plastic crisis
Civil society groups from Germany, including Greenpeace, BUND, Deutsche Umwelthilfe, HEJ! Support, Surfrider Europe, WECF, and the Heinrich Böll Foundation have issued 15 demands to the government to stop flooding the world with plastic! Their demands include holding manufacturers and distributors liable for the health, environmental and climate damage caused by their products, and promoting reusable solutions.

| | Malaysia returns shipments of wastes!
After sending back almost 4,000 tonnes – or 150 shipping containers – of waste back to its original owners last year, Malaysia remains on the warpath against plastic waste illegally delivered to its shores.
In reaction, #breakfreefromplastic changemaker Mageswari Sangaralingam said, “We are supportive of the Malaysian government’s move to send back shipments of illegal plastic waste. However, the dumping of residual waste of plastics is still prevalent causing here. Thus, we urge the Malaysian government to enforce total ban on imports of plastic and e-waste besides stepping up surveillance and prosecution of cases involving illegal trafficking of these wastes.”
