Subject:Â Climate & plastics movements solidarity in #BrandAudit2020
Hi Friend,
Skye Male here from Break Free From Plastic (BFFP).🙂 Hope you’re staying safe and healthy!
I’m reaching out in connection with our recent invitations to join #BrandAudit2020 this September and the possibility of working together to tackle both the climate and plastics crises. By combining hard data, citizen science, and community organizing, brand audits have become a powerful tool for recording and tracking down the corporations responsible for polluting the planet with plastic. BFFP members like you from around the world are demanding that these top polluting corporations reveal their total plastic footprint, reduce the amount of plastic they produce, and redesign their packaging to be reusable or refillable. You can learn more about brand audits here: https://bit.ly/BA2020toolkit
The climate and plastics crises are two sides of the same coin: the fossil fuel industry. The petrochemical sector, which uses fossil fuels to produce plastics, continues to expand at an alarming rate, with plastic production slated to increase by 40% in the next decade. And a bulk of those plastics will be for single-use packaging—the ones used by Coca-Cola, Unilever, Nestle, and the other top corporate plastic polluters we’ve identified in the last two brand audits.
Groups like yours that work on climate issues were an important part of previous brand audits, and we’re hoping to work more closely with the climate justice movement in this year’s brand audits and strengthen our solidarity in opposition to Big Oil and its corporate customers. Apart from inviting you to join the brand audits, we hope you’d consider inviting other groups in your network to join as well, as part of our globally coordinated outreach to climate allies. If you’re interested, I’ll share a brand audit invitation email you can use. The plan is for the invitation to go out to allies starting September 10.
Please let me know if you’d like to be part of this effort and if you have any questions!
Thank you!
In solidarity,
Skye Male
