In Solidarity with #BlackLivesMatter
Eight days after the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, the Break Free From Plastic movement issued an official statement reaffirming the unequivocal truth that Black Lives Matter, and joining in solidarity with our Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) members fighting for Freedom, Liberation, and Justice around the world.
Social Justice. Racial Justice. Environmental Justice. We believe these are all part of a single, globally-connected Movement for Justice. We are committed to utilizing our platforms responsibly and proactively, centering the voices of BIPOC community members at all levels of our leadership, and continuing to fight racism and systemic oppression around the world.

Plastic industry groups recently requested $1 Billion in financial support from the US government! In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, local recyclers and wasteworkers need our support more than corporate giants. That’s why, together with more than 100 leading organizations, we’re calling on the US Congress to reject the industry’s $1B request, and pass the #BreakFreeFromPlastic Pollution Act instead!

| | | | 2,134 brands polluting China’s coastal areas!
In its recently released 2019 Brand Audit report on coastal waste, #breakfreefromplastic member Rendu Ocean found 7,327 pieces of branded garbage among 190,000 pieces of coastal garbage across 36 cities in the country. Cocoa-Cola, the number one polluter in our global brand audit database ranked third, while the top polluters were local corporations.
Break Free From Plastic China collaborated with eight non-profit groups in issuing a petition calling on big companies to reduce plastic use in their packaging.

| | | Greenpeace East Asia exposes Hong Kong supermarket’s failure on plastic-free initiatives
In Hong Kong, a Greenpeace East Asia report finds the largest supermarkets are failing to implement substantial or innovative plastic-free policies. Ironically, an April 2019 poll revealed that over 90% of respondents agree that supermarkets should remove unnecessary packaging. #breakfreefromplastic changemaker Hall Sion Chan of Greenpeace East Asia says, “The results make it clear that supermarkets may have relied on false solutions to tackle the plastics problem.”
