Zero Waste Month Kicks Off in the Philippines

 

It’s Zero Waste Month this January in the Philippines! Activists from the #breakfreefromplastic Philippines project are opposing false solutions and showing that Zero Waste is the way to go.

LA Times Endorses the Presidential Plastics Action Plan

 

The Los Angeles Times Editorial Board endorsed the U.S. Presidential Plastics Action Plan this week, highlighting the reality that “single-use plastic is a climate change issue.” The plan urges President-elect Joe Biden to take eight key actions that would address the plastic pollution crisis during his first year in office, including ending fossil fuel extraction on federal lands and waters, suspending/denying permits for new or expanded plastic production facilities, and advancing environmental justice in petrochemical corridors.

A Bird’s-Eye View of the Petrochemical Buildout in Texas

 

A new video by #breakfreefromplastic member FracTracker Alliance provides an aerial view of the sprawling oil, gas, and petrochemical infrastructure along the Gulf Coast of Texas. 


In the past year alone, the fossil fuel industry has planned and/or completed more than 80 new petrochemical plants in the state. These facilities produce tons of greenhouse gases and toxic (often radioactive) waste, as well as air and water pollution that harms frontline communities and threatens vulnerable ecosystems.

The Green Earth Calls for Stricter Border Control of Hong Kong to Prevent a Plastic Waste Trade

 

#breakfreefromplastic member The Green Earth urges Hong Kong’s environmental and customs officials to strengthen the country’s border control on illegal transfers of plastic waste. In a report released last week, The Green Earth revealed that 68,000 tonnes of plastic scraps were imported from the US during the first ten months of 2020. 


Ray Yeung, Campaign and Communications Manager of The Green Earth said, “Hong Kong is not the major source of plastic waste on the globe. Yet, its failure to monitor and halt waste trade leads to repeated condemnations from the global community.”

Plastic Change launches final animation of its “New Plastic Narrative” series

 

Plastic Change’s “New Plastic Narrative” campaign consists of 6 small animations crafted to shift the narrative around single-use plastic, promote reuse, and demand corporate accountability, in a fun and engaging way.


In “The End of the Line,” the final animation of the series, single-use plastic is produced in a nightmarish, Tim Burton inspired, universe, emphasizing how single-use should be a thing of the past.

New Report Out: The State of Zero Waste Cities in Europe

 

A new report, by #breakfreefromplastic member Zero Waste Europe, showcases success stories of Zero Waste Cities.


What is a Zero Waste City? It begins with a door-to-door separate collection system. Municipalities then work to prevent waste from occurring in the first place, by putting policies in place that prioritize reuse.
