The Myth of Plastic Recycling

In time for Global Recycling Day, #breakfeefromplastic’s Global Coordinator Von Hernandez and Sustainable Asia’s Director Marcy Trent Long unpack the myth of recycling in an opinion piece published in South China Morning Post:

“It is clear that recycling alone will not be enough to solve the plastic pollution crisis. The real solution lies further upstream: reducing the amount of plastics being produced. This would be good for climate change as the feedstock for plastic is fossil fuel. And it might compel consumer goods companies to reduce their plastic footprint and invest in alternative reuse or refill systems to deliver their products to the consumer.

Report launch: Malaysia is not a garbage dump!

Following the ban of solid waste imports by China in 2018, the waste trade unfortunately expanded into countries that do not have the regulatory frameworks and/or waste management infrastructure needed to deal with the massive influx. In Malaysia, this has resulted in lots of illegal recycling facilities and dumpsites in the country.

#breakfreefromplastic member C4 Center has been monitoring these developments closely, and recently held a webinar to present their findings.

US Waste exports continue

U.S. Plastic Waste Exports Continue Despite Global Ban

Even though more than 180 nations have ratified the Basel Convention, which prohibits exporting plastic waste to the Global South, new U.S. trade data for January shows that the country’s overall plastics exports have risen since the global ban went into effect.

“This is our first hard evidence that nobody seems to be paying attention to the international law. As soon as the shipments get on the high seas, it’s considered illegal trafficking. And the rest of the world has to deal with it,” said #breakfreefromplastic changemaker Jim Puckett, Executive Director of Basel Action Network.

Mapping Plastic Production in the United States

Two U.S. members of the Break Free From Plastic movement, FracTracker and Algalita, have created a map of the country showing how fracked gas is converted into plastic, as well as the impacts to climate change, human health, and environmental justice.

The project is part of Algalita’s Wayfinder Society, which gives young leaders the tools, guidance and network to face the plastic pollution crisis and discover new solutions.
