Waste Colonialism: Plastic pollution arrives in Latin America

Between January and August 2020, the United States shipped 44,173 tons of plastic waste—four times the weight of the Eiffel Tower—to 15 Latin American countries. An investigative report by members of GAIA LAC (Latin America and the Caribbean) reveals the untold story of how the United States is exporting its plastic problems to Latin America in spite of both national and international laws.

EIA report reveals scale and impact of international plastic waste trade

The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) has released a new report which unveils the extent of the world's plastic waste and pollution problem.


The report reveals that over a quarter billion tonnes of plastic waste has been legally traded in the last 30 years and the EU has consistently been one of the largest contributors.
 

In line with this report, the plastics waste dragon landed in Brussels as part of a BFFP and Rethink Plastic Alliance action calling for the European Commission to propose a ban on plastic waste exports.

SDCEA’s climate activism in South Africa

The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) in South Africa joined climate activists worldwide for the Global Climate Strike. SDCEA leaders marched to the Durban city hall and met with local government officials to deliver a memorandum holding them accountable for their ongoing investment in fossil fuels and their inaction on the climate crisis.


The organisation is calling for a just transition to renewables and alternatives to benefit our people and planet.

China ramps up efforts to tackle plastic pollution with five-year plan

China recently published a five-year action plan to curb plastic pollution and meet its carbon neutrality targets. Some efforts include phasing out single-use plastics, boosting recycling, and promoting alternatives to plastic among others.


The plan for 2021-2025 is expected to improve the country's management of the entire chain of plastic pollution. However, the proposed agenda also entails raising urban waste incineration targets by 2025.

Rejecting Single-Use Plastics In Asia

#breakfreefromplastic member GAIA Asia Pacific has published a report zooming into the success stories of four cities in the region who have succeeded despite the lack of nation-wide laws phasing out SUPs.

"Regulatory Catalysts: Rejecting Single-Use Plastics In Asia'' showcases the cities of San Fernando and San Carlos in the Philippines, Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, India, and Jakarta in Indonesia.
