New Site, greenwash.com, Exposes Corporations' Greenwashing Efforts
A brand new look has been given to Changing Market's site, greenwash.com, and the campaign has expanded to include examples of greenwashing in the plastics space. From lazy refill solutions by Procter & Gamble to office chairs made of ocean plastics by Herman Miller, greenwashing is everywhere and the examples might surprise you!
In partnership with the Cape Agulhas Municipality, the Zero Waste Association of South Africa (ZWASA) has made significant progress with its Zero Waste Pilot Project in Bredasdorp, a small town located in the Western Cape of South Africa with the ambitious goal to divert 100% of organic waste from the landfill by the year 2027. As part of their commitment to integrating waste pickers, they have identified and engaged with twenty waste pickers working in the Cape Agulhas Municipality’s landfill site.
BFFP US Members Respond to the “West Virginia v. EPA” SCOTUS Decision
The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision severely limits the authority of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate pollution under the Clean Air Act, which will further intensify the climate crisis and cause disproportionate harm to frontline communities. #breakfreefromplastic members —including Greenpeace USA, Earthworks, the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL), and the Center for Environmental Health (CEH) — issued statements condemning the decision and urging the federal government to take corrective action.
#breakfreefromplastic Urges Governments, Stakeholders to #StopShippingPlasticWaste
At two international events in June, BFFP members took a stand against plastic waste shipments from the US, EU, UK, and Japan to countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In a side event at the Basel Convention COP15, the Basel Action Network and a group of experts presented evidence of illegal waste trade, drawing attention to non-compliance with the global plastic waste trade ban. Then, in a panel at the UN Oceans Conference, BFFP members discussed global plastic waste trade and its role in marine pollution.
Plastic Threat: A Problem on the Coasts of Veracruz
After monitoring eleven beaches in the Veracruz System Arrecifal National Park, Greenpeace Mexico has published a study revealing that plastic waste was present in all of the ecosystems studied. The goal is to use this research to put more pressure on legislators and other political actors to reform national plastics regulations.
