Los Angeles Times Exclusive: South Korea’s plastic waste surge due to COVID-19

South Korea’s waste collectors are dealing with increasing amounts of plastic during the ongoing pandemic. While some of the plastic waste comes from personal protective equipment (PPE), much of the increase is due to the low price of oil, which serves as the raw material for producing single-use plastic.

In response, #breakfreefromplastic changemaker Choony Kim, of Korea Federation of Environmental Movements/Friends of the Earth Korea (KFEM/FoE Korea), says, “Cases of infection via surface transmission remain unproven, but the industry has been quick to capitalize on the pandemic to justify the increasing use of single-use plastics. Experts released a statement in June attesting that there is no scientific evidence to show that only single-use plastic can protect consumers from COVID-19 transmission."

Client Earth takes on Petrochemical Giant Ineos

#breakfreefromplastic member Client Earth has taken emergency legal action to block the construction of Ineos’ proposed €3 billion plastics plant in the Belgian port of Antwerp.

Ineos has received the green light from the Flemish government to destroy 55 hectares of forest to begin construction. Client Earth, with an alliance of NGOs - including #breakfreefromplastic members Greenpeace Belgium, Recycling Network Benelux, Zero Waste Europe and Gallifrey Foundation - is fighting back to protect the land and block the buildout.

For Client Earth, “Project One will not only have huge climate and environmental repercussions, which the operators have not accounted for, they have also failed to provide sufficient proof that it is in line with a climate-neutral and circular economy.”

A new #breakfreefromplastic series

Each month, the Members in the Spotlight series will highlight a #breakfreefromplastic member organization! For this first installment, get to know Oceana Europe!

"Plastic is already in the sediment, and the deepest parts of the ocean are acting as sinks or 'plastic traps'. The fact that we don’t see it doesn’t mean that it’s not there - this is the archaeological legacy of our generation," says Natividad Sánchez, Campaign Director at Oceana Europe.
