Mexico rules against plastic ban, protecting the interests of FEMSA - Coca Cola
In less than 10 minutes and with 4 votes in favor, the Second Chamber of the SCJN exempted two companies from complying with the PET and Styrofoam bans in Oaxaca: Oxxo and Propimex, both linked
to Femsa Coca-Cola. This decision sets a legal precedent that endangers other countries’ state prohibitions and undermines the autonomy of federal entities. This represents a setback to years of work by our members on single-use plastic bans.
Member in the Spotlight with CIEL, #breakfreefromplastic, 2022
Why younger generations are central to the global plastics treaty process
One of #breakfreefromplastic's younger members, Rachel Radvany from CIEL, celebrated International Youth Day with us as part of our Member in the Spotlight blog series. CIEL has been working in a strong coalition of civil society organisations to advocate for an ambitious Global Plastics treaty, following the mandate granted at
UNEA 5.2 in March 2022. The role that youth can play in this process is vital, with younger generations facing the impacts of plastic pollution for decades to come.
Twenty-eight participants at the Africa Zero Waste & Climate Action Workshop
Celebrating International Youth Day with a Zero Waste & Climate Action Workshop
Twenty-eight participants across the African region attended the Africa team’s Zero Waste and Climate Action workshop. The speakers included Johnson Doe, of the Kpone Landfill Waste Pickers Association, and Niven Reddy and Desmond Alugnoa from GAIA/BFFP Africa. Participants also had the chance to hear Ethelyn Echep, a Cameroonian Poet, perform her spoken word piece on Man and Plastic. To cap off
the celebration, youth changemakers from End Plastic Pollution Uganda, Students Environmental Assembly Nigeria, and AEEFG Tunisia presented their very own youth-led zero waste solutions.

U.S. labeling change says polypropylene plastic can be marketed as “widely recyclable” despite 2.7% national recycling rate
A labeling program called How2Recycle says that packaging made from polypropylene can now be marketed as “widely recyclable" because 60% of
consumers in the U.S. are allowed to put these containers in their recycling bins…despite the fact that the federal government calculated a national recycling rate of only 2.7% of polypropylene packaging in 2018. At the same time, #breakfreefromplastic changemaker Jan Dell (#TheLastBeachCleanup) has calculated that only 28% of people in the U.S. even have access to recycling systems that accept polypropylene tubs. We appreciate Jan calling out the need for accuracy, transparency & accountability in recycling labeling!
