Court Orders Congressional Action to Ban Single-Use Plastics in Mexico

An administrative tribunal has ruled that the Mexican Congress must begin work on legislation to ban single-use plastics, recognising their impact on health and the environment and the state's duty to prevent exposure to toxic substances. The injunction was filed by Greenpeace Mexico, El Poder del Consumidor and the Red Mexicana de Acción Ecológica, a member of the Colectiva Malditos Plásticos and Break Free From Plastic.

The injunction against Congress is part of the organisations' follow-up to two rulings by the Second Chamber of the Supreme Court in which it granted an appeal to the soft drinks industry, invalidating the ban on single-use plastics such as PET and expanded polystyrene in the state of Oaxaca.

This set a very negative precedent for the progressive protection of human rights and health, and was a clear setback for previously won environmental rights.

Non-violent Demonstrators Arrested Outside Formosa Plastics Corporation, USA Headquarters

On Friday, August 2nd, more than 60 environmental justice leaders from across the U.S. – including dozens of #BreakFreeFromPlastic members – gathered outside the headquarters of Formosa Plastics Corporation, USA in Livingston, New Jersey, to raise awareness about atrocities committed by Formosa Plastics Group in Texas, Louisiana, and Vietnam.

Several activists chained themselves to the employee entrances of the corporate headquarters and refused to leave without acknowledgement of the group’s demands for accountability, which resulted in six arrests and the decision by the corporation to not open for business at their headquarters that day.

2023 Goldman Prize Winner Diane Wilson was among those arrested: “Today, we used the power of nonviolent resistance to shut down Formosa Plastics USA, and raised the awareness of the employees and the local community!”

Adjusting the Lens on Plastics and Healthcare

The plastics industry is becoming increasingly influential in shaping policy and public perception. In April 2024, during the fourth round of negotiations for the Global Plastics Treaty (INC4), Husky Technologies and the Coalition of Concerned Manufacturers and Businesses of Canada (CCMBC) launched a brazen campaign claiming “Plastics Save Lives,” emphasising plastics’ role in healthcare and other essential services. This narrative starkly contradicts mounting scientific evidence on the health impacts of plastics and its associated toxic chemicals. During Plastic Free July, the BFFP/GAIA Africa Team has been working to dismantle the myths and shift the narrative from “Plastics Save Lives” to #PlasticHarmsLives.
