Africa Day: A Plea to End Waste Trade Colonialism

Exporting illegal waste shipments from the Global North to countries in the Global South with limited or nonexistent waste management systems is an unjust form of environmental racism. Africa is not a dumping ground, and African countries are fighting back against the exporters who are motivated by cheap and quick ways to dispose of their waste. 


On Africa Day (May 25th), Break Free From Plastic and GAIA spotlighted leaders working together across the continent to stop waste colonialism and calling on the relevant authorities to prohibit the illegal waste trade, which has had damaging effects on the health and livelihoods of communities near pollution sites.

Period Poverty Week

Most conventional menstrual products are single-use and made of 90% plastic, contributing to the plastic waste issue. These products are also not accessible to everyone that needs them. Period Poverty Week aims to educate on the issue of period poverty and its impact on menstruator by connecting the social, health and environmental angle of periods.

Ecoton says, “Rivers free from diapers!” in Mojokerto, Indonesia! 

ECOTON’s Diapers Evacuate Brigade continues their mission to free Indonesian rivers from diapers. This week, the group went to Mojokerto and found more than twelve dumpsites of diapers.

#breakfreefromplastic changemaker Prigi Arisandi sheds light on the systemic causes of the issue: There isn’t any preventive effort or education program for consumers of disposable diapers or government pressure on the producers to stop producing plastics.”

Stop exporting plastic waste

Urging the U.S. to Ratify the Basel Convention

More than 150 organizations, including dozens of Break Free From Plastic members around the world, are calling on President Biden to fully ratify the 1989 Basel Convention on global waste management and honor his promises to uphold environmental justice. 

“The U.S. is the only developed country in the world that fails to control global dumping of its toxic and nuisance waste," said Jim Puckett of the Basel Action Network. "Every day we send hundreds of container loads of dirty and mixed plastics, and hazardous electronic wastes to developing countries—all in violation of international law and the principles of environmental justice."
