I trust that his message finds you well and good. From time to time Bohart sends along information about other goings-on that we think you may find of interest. I am sending this out to let you know about a concert that I have been working on with my brother Kris under our Legstand shingle. On Friday 6 December 2024 in the town centre immediately to the east of the home of Bohart HQ, we are presenting The Nutcracker Suite and More Songs of the Holiday Season performed by the 15-Piece Fred Stride Jazz Orchestra.
When my brother and I started our theatre company in the Ranch Park basement of our Coquitlam family home in 1993 we didn’t have a place to present much of anything around this place. Over the years of our first company we have worked together to produce many concerts and plays in Vancouver but also in places as far flung as Toronto, New York, Minneapolis, Seattle, Halifax, and Winnipeg but never in our home town until now. Following the success of Bohart's April 2024 concert at The Cultch in Vancouver, Beyond Category: The Music of Duke Ellington with the Vancouver Jazz Orchestra and some very special guests including Dawn Pemberton on vocals, dance performances by Cori Caulfield, and the amazing Andy Hunter of the WDR Big Band on trombone, we set out to plan our next concert to be our first one in the Tri-Cities.
I am especially thrilled to share my enthusiasm for the music of Duke Ellington and his compatriot Billy Strayhorn with their arrangement for jazz orchestra of Tchaikovsky’s score for The Nutcracker ballet. It is a rare treat to hear this piece of music live with a full jazz orchestra let alone one the calibre of the Fred Stride Jazz Orchestra which features some of the best jazz musicians from across Metro Vancouver. And, as it will be “that time of the year”, the orchestra will play some fantastic arrangements of some well known and other not so well known songs of the season.
Tickets are $52 for adults, $44 for seniors and $36 for students through the Evergreen Cultural Centre’s Box Office at evergreenculturalcentre.ca/events/the-nutcracker-suite/ or by calling 604•927•6555. Tickets are selling well and we are anticipating a good turnout.
It will be great to celebrate this music and the season with friends from across the Tri-Cities and from around Vancouver. I really hope that you might make the show.
