| Hey Friend,
How's it going? It's your muscle building coach Lee Hayward here and I hope you're having a great weekend...
It was a perfect summer's day here in Newfoundland - hot & sunny - and I spent it outside doing one of my favorite hobbies, racing at the airstrip with our local autocross club!
|
| | During hot summer days like these I find that I sweat a lot more than normal, and I'll drink more water than normal to ensure that I don't get dehydrated.
That's pretty normal, but in addition to drinking more water I also consume more sodium.
Purposely adding salt / sodium to your diet may seem a bit odd to some, but it's actually very important to keep your electrolytes in check, especially if you are sweating a lot and drinking a lot of water.
The body is constantly regulating its handling of sodium. During the course of a day, the intestines absorbs dietary sodium while the kidneys excrete sodium into the urine.
When you sweat a lot, be it from a hard workout our just spending time outside on a hot day, you are losing a lot of extra sodium and that sodium needs to be replaced.
Despite what you may have heard from the mainstream media, it's actually MORE dangerous to consume "too little" sodium, rather than "too much".
Low sodium levels can have a negative impact on your workouts - such as feeling weak, not being able to get a good pump while training, low energy levels, muscle cramps, etc.
I have an article on my website that covers some important info about the health benefits of sodium and why hard training bodybuilders & athletes should be consuming more sodium during the summer in order to make up for what they lose from sweating and drinking more water.
