Having takedowns in your arsenal of techniques gives you a massive advantage over other practitioners but understanding takedowns that actually work in Jiu Jitsu can be very difficult. Since we start from the knees so much and our main focus is rolling, it's easy to let the takedown aspect slip.

Practitioners drastically improve at these moves and today most blue belts, and even some white belts, have pretty advanced guards.
