Subject: Waist Band Dumbbell Curls for better biceps...

This is a very simple way to do better dumbbell curls, both in body position and in maintaining tension on the biceps.

If you (or your clients) have issues keeping good body position while curling, this is going to help a lot. It's great for work sets but also as a teaching tool for bicep activation and curl form.

Hitch a band to a solid post (like the upright of a power rack, for example). Then step through the loop.

Set the band around your waist.

Pick up your dumbbells.

Now stand up and step back so that you get a stretch on the band. Lean back slightly into the stretch. This puts your body at a bit of a backward angle. This is going to put a bit more stretch on the biceps at the bottom.

Now curl up one dumbbell (or both...you can also do both at the same time). Your backwards-leaning body position prevents you from using body "english" to heave the weights up.

The backwards lean moves the dumbbells back into your center of balance so that you don't feel like you HAVE to use body movement to lift the weights.

With a normal curl, the dumbbell comes forward in front of your toes, which causes you to have to adjust your balance. With this setup, it doesn't. As you can see in the picture below, at the mid-point of the curl, the dumbbell is directly over my toes.

This allows you to keep a constant balanced body position, focusing on the bicep action.

Lower and repeat on the other side.

You can use this setup with any rep range and weight of dumbbell. The same principle will apply. The heavier the dumbbells, the thicker the band you'll want to use, though.

Give this a try and you'll notice how much better the dumbbell curl feels.
