Subject: Vegan protein powder...good or no?
So a few weeks ago, I was approached by a company asking me to test out their new vegan protein called "Battle Ready Fuel."
Here's what it looks like:
I said, "absolutely." I always interested in testing out new supplements. And with many people opting for a vegetarian or vegan diet, I was interested to see if this would be a good option for them.
Getting complete proteins can be a challenge, especially for full vegans.
1. What's In It?
Here's the ingredient list straight off the bottle.
As you can see, pea protein is the first ingredient. Pea protein is actually a complete protein, containing all 9 of the essential amino acids. It has fewer BCAA's than something like whey but is higher in other aminos, such as arginine.
Hemp protein is also a complete protein, and does contribute a few more varied aminos to the formula, even though the amount is a fair bit less.
When you read through the website for Battle Ready Fuel, you'll see that their focus is primarily on the digestability of these two types of protein versus animal protein.
And while they do have a point in terms of how protein utilization does drop as you get older, due to the decrease in digestive enzyme production, personally, I don't think it's the major selling point of this formula.
I think the "vegan-friendly" focus is key.
2. What Does It Taste Like?
I can't really show you a picture of what it tastes like :)...but here's a picture of the inside of the container.
Pea protein (and hemp protein) have a distinct flavor... not bad...more "earthy" than what you might be used to with whey or casein protein.
The flavor that I tried is peanut butter and, having tried it on it's own with just water, I found it to be just fine. It's not going to taste like Skippy out of the jar, but it's good.
3. Why Use This Instead of Whey?
That's the key question.
First, if you're vegan, you don't eat animal products so any animal-based protein is out. And this contains 2 sources of complete proteins for you. If you have issues with milk products, this is very good option instead of whey or casein.
Second, if you're NOT vegan or even vegetarian, I think there's benefit to rotating your protein sources to get different spectrums of nutrients (aminos and micronutrients). I regularly rotate hemp protein into my protein intake, going off whey completely for stretches of time.
Third, it contains digestive enzymes right in the formula, which is going to help you get even more out of the protein itself.
The Bottom Line
Battle Ready Fuel gives you a complete protein source without animal products.
And just like any protein supplement, there's nothing magic about it, but it CAN help you with recovery and muscle growth, especially if you're vegetarian and have a tough time getting enough protein in your diet without supplementation.
If you're not vegetarian, it could be useful for rotating a different type of protein into your diet.
Overall, it's very good stuff. Not cheap, but you're getting a very high quality product that is manufactured in the UK, under stringent guidelines
(FYI it's shipped from the US and shipping is FREE)
This is absolutely a protein supplement I would recommend.
