Subject: The shortcut to a bigger squat... simple but not easy
The short cut is Negatives/Eccentrics...they're not glamorous, but they work extremely well for building strength. And I'm not talking about just lowering the bar down slowly...I'm talking about REAL negatives where you overload the squat with slightly more than you can lift and you fight it all the way down. The trouble with doing them for squats is that you have two choices...use a spotter to help you get the bar back up to the top, or remove weight plates at the bottom, squat up, then put them back on at the top. The first obviously requires a spotter...the second is a pain in the butt. It takes time and takes you away from the focus of the set. You're going to use a change in elevation in the power rack to make the negative a FULL range of motion and the positive about a HALF range of motion, so you can squat back up without changing weight. Here's a snapshot of the bottom of the negative (yes, I'm standing on stacks of bumper plates to add elevation...I'll tell you exactly how it works).
