FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Kansas City, MO—Licia Clifton-James, wife of Kansas City Mayor Sly James, is cutting her curatorial teeth on a new exhibition at the Belger Arts Center. Her selection of 20th century American paintings, photographs, and works on paper; however, doesn’t include a single work of art by a United States citizen. The Belger Arts Center is proud to present Art of the Americas, curated by Clifton-James, Vice President and Board Member of the Pan American Association of Kansas City and doctoral student in Art History at the University of Missouri – Kansas City. The exhibition includes works from 27 of the 35 countries represented in the Organization of American States. Clifton-James’ goal is to encourage cultural knowledge about our neighbors in the Western Hemisphere while establishing Kansas City as the cross-cultural hub of the heartland. Presented in partnership with the Pan American Association of Kansas City, the exhibition includes works from the Organization of American States’ Art Museum of the Americas. The selected works reflect the rich diversity of artistic expression found North, Central, and South America and provide an overview of stylistic and iconographic trends beginning in the early 20th Century. Because the exhibition is a celebration of the “other” countries of the Americas, no works by United States artists are included. According to Clifton-James, “It is my hope that by viewing these works of art representing various peoples and cultures, that we will see the uniqueness and beauty of each culture and realize there is a large hemisphere connected to us, worthy of our acknowledgement, collaboration, and respect.”
Art of the Americas runs April 8th – August 6th. The exhibition’s opening reception coincides with the national Pan American Day on April 14th.
