BETTER TOGETHER: CELEBRATING THE 2016 RED STAR ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE
Better Together June 3rd - August 6th Opening Reception: First Friday, June 3, 6 - 9 pm
Belger Crane Yard Studios 2011 Tracy Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri 64108 816-474-7316
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Kansas City, MO—This summer, Belger Crane Yard Studios celebrates the achievements of its six Red Star Artists-in-Residence with the exhibition Better Together on display June 3 - August 6th.
The Red Star Artist-in-Residency (A.I. R.) program, led by Tommy Frank, is nationally recognized for its exceptional studio environment, success of its participants, and commitment to community engagement. Since 2000, thirty-four artists from across the country have received admission into Belger’s highly competitive residency program. For 1-2 years, resident artists participate in the maintenance of the studio’s shared work spaces, support Belger's educational programs, and serve as valuable resources to the Belger Crane Yard Studios' community members.
By the end of August, four of Belger’s six residents will complete the Red Star program: Brice Dyer, Jana Evans, Holly Siggelow-Dyer, and Maura Wright.
Christiana Erives and Hiromi Iyoda will stay on for their second year, providing program continuity and serving as mentors to the incoming residents. The diversity of objects in Better Together reflects the artistic range of this 2016 Red Star Artist-In-Residence class. Functional ceramic vessels by Jana Evans and Holly Siggelow-Dyer demonstrate their mastery of traditional processes while similar works by Brice Dyer reveal a more unconventional approach. An interest in storytelling unites the work of sculptors Maura Wright, Hiromi Iyoda, and Christina Erives who employ imagery from various cultures to convey their unique visions of the world.
As the exhibition title suggests, the artists are “better” for the time they’ve spent learning from and teaching one another. Belger and Kansas City are better as well: a constant stream of innovative, creative thinkers helps create a vibrant, inspired community. |
