Winter is here! 

Got your plan for winter? 
With cold days and colder nights bees should be kept out of valleys or low lying areas and moved up hills or out into clearings to avoid black frost and extended cold exposure. 

Also point your hive entrances to face the sun rise in the East and move bees into sunny areas and avoid shade where possible. If you expect below freezing temperatures this is especially useful.

You may want to feed your bees if they are low in stored honey reserves. We have entrance feeders and feeder frames which can be used to feed the bees when there is low nectar flows and cold weather that the bees can not fly to forage. Especially when temperatures are below 12 degrees celsius. 

What about winter crops? 
  • Cosmos is helpful in parts of the country 
  • Coming soon is the Aloes! They are the best indigenous source of pollen in South Africa. 
  • Some blue gums flower late at this time of year. 
  • Plant Lavender Fine on fixed sites to improve winter nectar foraging with a ratio of 2 hives per hectare being optimal. *Any amount of winter crop is useful however.

Got a farm and growing crops? Bees can pollinate your crops and usually contribute to more than 50% of the pollination of most crops over and above that of butterflies and flies.

Our recommended first steps are that you get hold of the blue book, Beekeeping in South Africa which is available on our website by mail order or if you collect in Centurion.

Southern Hemisphere: 
As winter edges closer make preparations for 

Consider moving your bees from gullies and low lying areas to higher ground and into sunny spots so they can have some warmth during the day. 

For really cold areas, consider insulation and feeding your bees. We use feeding frames and entrance feeders to help with this. Both are available from the Bee WARE shop.  

Northern Hemisphere:
Focus on preparing for the coming spring season. 

Plot and plan your harvesting cycle for the coming season. 

Ensure you have sites with permission from farmers/landowners to place your bees on if you don't keep bees on your own property.

You may also want to plant bee friendly flowers like sweet basil, lavender fine, rosemary and borage. All of which can also be used in cooking...
