Want to know our secret?

We use internal and external feeders to best provide our bees over winter with life-preserving sugar water.

Getting chilly during the night. Wintering bees can starve if they don't have honey and food to survive on or collect.

When it goes below 9 degrees Celsius, bees cannot fly and cannot collect any food and water. They then huddle together and eat what honey stores they have in the hive itself.

Feeding with sugar water and some pollen is important. But instead of feeding 1:1 solutions like in summer (northern hemisphere now), it is important to switch to a 2:1 solution for wintering bees!

Winter Feeding Recipe:

2Kg of white sugar

1L of water

Juice from 1 lemon

Feeder frame / External Feeder

Bring the water to high enough temperature to dissolve the sugar.

Do NOT boil.

Let it cool before adding lemon juice and storing away for use.

P.S. We have feeder frames and external feeders at the shop and online by using these you feed the bees the sugar water solution during the winter as a honey substitute (different to nectar).
