How do bees cope now?
We do not harvest any honeycomb in the brood chamber now. For one thing, it creates insulation for the bees during harsh winter nights and mornings.

It also provides the colony with ready to eat stores of energy to help them keep warm inside the hive. This is vital for when cold fronts hit your area and potentially black frost occurs.

What do we do?
We tend to move bees into full sun positions, where applicable, facing North-East so they benefit from the earliest warmth from the sun.

We will consider feeding the bees using our internal feeder frames that hold 2 compartments for supplying a combination of food types such as a mix of maizena & soya on one side and sugar water on the other.

Let's talk formulas!
For a strong mix of sugar water a 1:1 formula is recommended & usually prescribed for encouraging brood laying and also sustaining the bees during harsh winter climate.

For less strength use one cup of sugar to every 2 cups of water resulting in a 1:2 formula. Remember sugar water is a nectar or honey substitute which provides the necessary carbohydrates for bees to be energised, keep warm and work hard.

For Maizena, take one cup of maizena and 1 TSP of soya powder and mix it together before putting inthe feeder frame. The Maizena & soya podwer mix supplies the bees with protein much like the pollen they collect from the flowers in the field.

Both the carbohydrates & protein substitutes are recommended for wintering bees in especially areas with harsh conditions during winter & no to little winter crops.

Queen bee in hive
Can you spot her? The queen bee [above] is the only fertile female in the Scutellata colony and therefore the only bee that can properly lay eggs of either male or female workers. The Cape worker is reproductive capable raising concern over the relocation into Scutellata territory!

  First Steps
    Keep reading articles, bee books
We will be sending you tips, articles and news about beekeeping that will help you to better understand the benefits of bees for all of us!
Our recommended first steps are that you get hold of the blue book, Beekeeping in South Africa which is available on our website by mail order or if you collect in Centurion.

Southern Hemisphere:  Some bluegums are flowering now which enables bees to survive the bitter cold evenings and mornings we are experiencing.

Soon the Aloes will be flowering, if not already, which make our bees extremely agressive however they increase in population vastly and grow on the aloe pollen and nectar flows tremendously.

Do not harvest any honey from your colonies from now on.

Northern Hemisphere help colonies to get going with the new nectar flows.

Jumpstart their collecting by feeding internally with a feeder frame or even use a makeshift super or deep super chamber which can keep sugar water in a compartment and soya with maizena in another to boost the bees coming our of winter season.
