"Bees are working diligently - let's help! "

Bees Doing #1: They are filling up the brood chamber and the super chamber....FAST!

Bees Doing #2: They're fanning excess moisture from the nectar collected, making it decline from about 80% down to an average of about 18% moisture content - *location dependent.

Bees Doing #3: Storing nectar, pollen and propolis in the hive.

What: What Bee tools help bees now?

Issue #1: Bees are pumping right now! Wax foundation sheets and spare frames are vital to keep production at it's optimum.

Issue #2:  Use Rhino Poef - Wild bee fuel - in your smoker to keep bees calm but also not taint or inject toxins into your honey by using newspaper and other impure smoker fuels.

Issue #3: Help your bees feel they have enough space

{Regular checking on supers for harvesting is paramount}

#Action Plan: How to Act

{Colonies are in FULL Expansion Mode - Southern Hemisphere}

Action #1: Getting a bee course under your belt may take a small investment.

But, it is just that - an investment into your hobby or small business to enable you to improve your performance and understanding of bees and your role as a beekeeper. Result: You aid your bees to make more honey.

Action #2: The Beekeeping in South Africa Book.

If you have a tight budget and we know Christmas and holidays are coming up (an idea as a gift for your beekeeper) then consider the "Blue Book".

It may be an old publication, which lacks some modern changes and updated research, however 70% of my knowledge in my first 2-years came from this book - after doing a bee course back in 2004.

Action #3: Swarm Catching Kit

  1. Ensure you have catch boxes out in the field with bee lure

  2. The hierarchy of swarm attractant goes like this:

    1. old comb and propolis melted and painted inside the catch box

    2. if you don't have (a), Swarm Wipes

    3. 2x drops of lemongrass oil at the back of the catch box

    4. For best results, place as recommended on the Start Beekeeping Academy

  3. More colonies can lead to more honey production, if you have the knowledge of how to manage and benefit from the process

  4. You can also sell extra bee colonies to build up a kitty for buying more frames, wax foundation sheets and super chambers for your honey production.

Success Stories From the Swarm Catcher

"With these tools and tips, I have regularly been able to place 20 catch boxes on a site, matching the resources above and in the start beekeeping academy, and filled up to 16 boxes within 7-10 days with new swarms to manage and do bee farming."
