The bees build on the aloes & this can be used to take advantage of the spring nectar flow but can also be used in order to make splits of your hives in August!

After the current cold front it is a good time to start feeding your existing honeybee colonies to encourage the queen bee to start laying eggs.

Once the first rains come in Spring time there is a floral explosion and nectar flow second to none.  We plan to take advantage of this by getting the bees to lay eggs beforehand at 1500 eggs a day on average over the next few weeks to emerge 18 days later. At first these worker bees will do inhouse work like cleaning, nursing and building. Roughly a week goes by before the worker bees leave the colony to become foragers.

So, to take advantage of the coming spring nectar flow, we as beekeepers, need to plan ahead.

Another consideration is that catch boxes are set out for catching of feral trekking swarms. Due to the nature of the Aloes being so strong in pollen supply they naturally encourage wild bee swarms to split on their own. These feral swarms begin trekking this time of year to be ready for spring.

If we are ready in time these trekking honey bee swarms will simply move into accommodation made available for them in the form of catch / trap boxes protected by Waksol and baited with lure built-in available from our bee shop or online. Imagine! Free honeybees that want to move into your catch boxes!

Last season, we had some customers call us within 36 hours of purchasing their trap boxes / hives to tell us that bees have already moved in! Why not Discover that excitement for yourself?

Queen bee in hive
Can you spot her? The queen bee [above] is the only fertile female in the Scutellata colony and therefore the only bee that can properly lay eggs of either male or female workers.
