Summer time is here and the new year is here!! The Summer Harvest...

With the heat wave in South Africa at the moment, it is vital to keep your bees hydrated! Try place a source of water nearby to your apiary that sits in the full sunlight.

P.S. We are working on the online shop so if you experience any problems please inform us. You are welcome to email & phone your orders through!

Place a sponge in the water or over the water so to allow water to be absorbed but that any drowning bees can escape.

Let's talk Summer Harvesting!
With the seasonal calendar of flowering taking place now the following fruits make for opportunities to harvest nectar and pollen for your bees:
  • Apricots
  • Blackberries- 95% pollinated by bees
  • Lemons - watch Facebook for benefits
  • Litchis - 85% pollinated by bees
  • Mangoes
  • Melon - good pollination opportunity but colonies decline (charge farmer a pollination service fee)
  • Mulberries
  • Nectarines
  • Pawpaws or papayas
  • Peaches - low honey producing
  • Plums - our recent Facebook post shows how effective bees are for plums and we promote the benefits on facebook for others
  • Pomegranates
  • Prunes
  • Quinces
  • Raspberries
  • Strawberries - honeybee pollination essential
  • Sweet melon
  • Summer berries
  • Watermelon - bees needed for pollination
What about for Vegetables:
  • Kidney Beans - benefit highly with strong nectar flows!
  • Maize - however there is ONLY a Pollen & honeydew benefit for bees & strictly NO Nectar!
  • Sunflower - check Facebook for the benefits
Now for Other Trees & plants:
  • Honey Thorn / Kriedoring - good pollen and nectar
  • Proteas - mixed flows with Ericas
  • Kalahari Vernonia - with good January rains - high pollen & nectar
  • Spekbossies - Cape areas

Got a farm and growing crops? Bees can pollinate your crops and usually contribute to more than 50% of the pollination of most crops over and above that of butterflies and flies.

We will be posting to FaceBook the actual pollination effects bees will have on crops in South Africa and elsewhere over the next week. Be sure to visit our FaceBook page for that info.

Here's a challenge: Which crop enjoys 300% increase in yields when 2x hives per hectare are utilised when flowering takes place?
Queen bee in hive
Can you spot her? The queen bee [above] is the only fertile female in the Scutellata colony and therefore the only bee that can properly lay eggs of either male or female workers.

We will be sending you tips, articles and news about beekeeping that will help you to better understand the benefits of bees for all of us!

Our recommended first steps are that you get hold of the blue book, Beekeeping in South Africa which is available on our website by mail order or if you collect in Centurion.

Southern Hemisphere:
Catch the last serious summer harvest before autumn sets in...

As late rains have come in South Africa it may assist bees to forage for a late honey harvest.

There are still a few trees and flowers that bloom this time of year in South Africa so take advantage where you can by paying attention to flowering calendar provided above.

Northern Hemisphere:
Focus on preparing for the coming spring season.

Plot and plan your harvesting cycle for the coming season.

Ensure you have sites with permission from farmers/landowners to place your bees on if you don't keep bees on your own property.

You may also want to plant bee friendly flowers like sweet basil, lavender fine, rosemary and borage. All of which can also be used in cooking...
