I started beekeeping out of a community project for Rotary back in 2003. Thusanang nearby Olievenhoutbosch was desperate for work and jobs but had few skills!
Rotary used their network to raise donations and seek projects to uplift the community while managing the entire project. I was approached to research income generating projects based on agricultural industry opportunities... So, chickens, cash crops, brick making, aquaponics and beekeeping were top candidates!
12 months later, I recognised the depth and value in the 7 pillars of beekeeping I teach in our Advanced Beekeeping Courses.
What I never though would happen when I started was not only did I learn about bees and honey, but I also learnt about botany, carpentry, logistics, cosmetics, candle-making, fire management, community and the power of social connections!
Beekeeping is not a solo adventure. Neither is the work of the bee. I learned so much from my interactions with them: the good, the bad and the itchy!
Stings make you swell, they definitely aren't swell! :) But boy, do they itch!
