Get Ready for Spring NOW!

Saturday 24th Sept - Bee course

It's seriously that time of year that gives any beginner or hard core beekeeper a great opportunity to start beekeeping and increase their apiary sizes.

Bees are especially seasonal in their behaviour with September to December being the absolute peak of bee activity for the Southern Hemisphere.

Our apiary in Mpumalanga has already had every trap box we set out in the field filled! Our farmer actually called to say we should please provide brood chambers as soon as possible as the trap boxes are overflowing with trekking swarms that are too big for the catch boxes.

If you have any interest in starting beekeeping now is the best time to begin. It's an insane period of activity for South African Beekepers with an amazing trekking swarm population about to start looking for new sites.

Honey Extractor 20-frame Experts's advice
The BEST TIME to start beekeeping is now! We have had feedback from our network of beekeepers around the country and the Litchis and Macadamian plantations are flowering away. Aside from just about every other spring flower.

If you have been feeding your bees it's time you inspect the hive for queen bee cells. Usually, this time of year leads to colonies that have wintered, that is they made it through the recent winter, leading to a propagation of the colony.

Bees will use this time of year to create a new queen bee or more. They have to take advantage of the high nectar flow and at the same time ensure their continued survival.

The Apis Mellifera Scutellata bee will use this time of year to naturally split and send off clone colonies that will swarm & trek to find a new site to take up residence.
