A photo of our new wax press!

The manual wax press is a useful piece of bee equipment used to squeeze and press honeycomb taken from the hive while harvesting honey, conducting bee removal services and practicing maintenance in the bee hive colonies.

Every year beekeepers or apiarists should practice maintenance in their apiaries by taking out 2-3 brood frames and remove the comb from below the first wire and process this in a wax press.

If you do have a spinner or extractor then you would simply uncap the honeycomb and replace the open comb back into the hive to be refilled.

If you do not have an extractor then you are likely to crush the honeycomb using a wax press or by hand and the manual press you see above is perfect as bee tool to use for this purpose.

How the manual wax press works: You place the honey comb at the bottom plate inside the encircled bars. Place the second pressure plate on top of the honey comb and fit the tunrstile pipe inside the guide hold and use some arm power to turn the vice pressure pipe downwards!

Presto! Your wax & honeycomb gets pressed and the raw honey then filters into the bottom plate and it exits using the outflow lip into a bucket ot other type of container.
Queen bee in hive
Can you spot her? The queen bee [above] is the only fertile female in the Scutellata colony and therefore the only bee that can properly lay eggs of either male or female workers. The Cape worker is reproductive capable raising concern over the relocation into Scutellata territory!

  First Steps
    Keep reading articles, bee books
We will be sending you tips, articles and news about beekeeping that will help you to better understand the benefits of bees for all of us!
Our recommended first steps are that you get hold of the blue book, Beekeeping in South Africa which is available on our website by mail order or if you collect in Centurion.

Southern Hemisphere: Colonies should be foraging still on Cosmos in parts of RSA. It's a beautiful honey however not usually a single floral source honey.

Northern Hemisphere help colonies winter down. Various places around the world use thermal protection for their bees. Tactics include long term feeding with sugar water and other protein based supplements such as soya mixed with yeast.

Unless you have a winter crop it is wise to remove supers and provide bees with sunny positions.  Insulate your bees with blankets or pillows using a spare empty super chamber.
