~The Bees Knees~!

~ June of  2019! ~
In the South, it's here... Winter is here!

We've lost 5 colonies at our one apiary due to lack of food already. This can happen during the winter and especially in-between inspections when there has been a particularly cold spell of weather. We also did splits on the recent Practical Intermediate Bee Training course which made it difficult this time of year for the colonies to remain strong.

African bee colonies have a high absconding ratio compared to their other cousins around the world. However, I like to think that this is an instinct that has kept our African bees genetically versatile and able to adapt to their environment, pests and disease while keeping the wild population strong as well!

What's the solution?

Use entrance feeders on each bee hive individually for best management and or feeding stations, which offer a more general option for the bees and can result in fighting as well as disease being spread as bees congregate together from different hives.

We've just made 5L of sugar water to be utilised to feed our apiary this week in Midrand so the remaining colonies will be kept strong and healthy during the winter time.

Vita Feed for Pollen Substitute
We also supply the natural pollen feed substitute at the shop which is really easy to mix and covers at least 50 hives per bottle.

There's more details on this further down...read on!

We've helped people start pollinating businesses, bee removal businesses, honey production and even other shops - simply because we can bee more together!

How can we help you bee more?

ALERT:> Ants can become a major risk when feeding sugar water to so make sure not to spill sugar water around or in the hive. USE Nip-It nearby to your hives to keep ants away from your apiary.

Discover the Bee-Friendly flowers, crops and plants that beekeepers should focus on this month in June for next flows:

~ Winter Short list ~

Blueberries
Aloe Davyana (highest pollen and nectar value)
Lemon orchards (flower all year round)

Recommendations: Even if you aren't able to take full advantage of these blossoming trees and plants now, plant some of them this year so they can be ready next year or a few years from now.

Plant now for the future and help give bees food for life.

Our next Easy Buzzing Beekeeping Course is on 6th July in Midrand.

Honey Pump Helps to Move Bulk Honey
Got a farm and growing crops? Bees can pollinate your crops and usually contribute to more than 60% of the pollination of most crops over and above that of butterflies and flies.

We will be posting to FaceBook the actual pollination effects bees will have on crops in South Africa and elsewhere over the next week. Be sure to visit our FaceBook page for that info.

Here's a challenge: Which crop enjoys 300% increase in yields when 2x hives per hectare are utilised when flowering takes place?
Queen bee in hive
Can you spot her? The queen bee [above] is the only fertile female in the Scutellata colony and therefore the only bee that can properly lay eggs of either male or female workers.

We will be sending you tips, articles and news about beekeeping that will help you to better understand the benefits of bees for all of us!

Our recommended first steps are that you get hold of the blue book, Beekeeping in South Africa which is available on our website by mail order or if you collect in Centurion.

Southern Hemisphere:
A sugar feeding practice is recommended at this time of year. Use entrance feeders to feed sugar water as a nectar substitute and use Vita Feed to provide pollen substitute, although this is not as important as sugar feeding for bees to survive.

Make products from bee by-products such as beeswax, honey, pollen and propolis harvested during the summer months.

Northern Hemisphere:
With long summer days the bees are working frantically collecting nectar and pollen relentlessly.

Ensure you check your colonies and inspect for harvesting and placing empty (wet) supers on top of built-out supers to provide enough space for the bees to build, process and store nectar to convert to honey!

Invest in honey extractors which make harvesting honey much more efficient for you as well as higher yielding for the bees as they just need to refill the honeycomb cells after an extraction versus rebuilding if you remove the comb entirely like with top bar hive harvesting.
