Beekeepers should again make preparations for the coming season.
If you are brand new then get hold of a Blue book, or
Practical Beekeeping ebook and come on a beginner beekeeping course. That way you are able to take advantage of the coming Spring hitting the ground running.
With the lingering cold weather bees are still struggling to keep warm and forage regularly. They cannot fly under 13 degrees Celsius which means they live longer form 60 - 90 days rather the average of about 35-40 days during the peak season! Less flying time means longer life span. It also means the bees forage less so it is a tough time of year for most colonies.
In order to make colonies strong for the Spring nectar flow, beekeepers should feed their colonies now. By feeding you increase the colony's ability to develop capacity now - rather than during the nectar flow thereby "missing" the opportunity - to create excess honey for you!
