Summer time is here and the new year is here!! We wish you all a great year ahead!

With the heat wave in South Africa at the moment, it is vital to keep your bees hydrated! Try place a source of water nearby to your apiary that sits in the full sunlight.

Place a sponge in the water or over the water so to allow water to be absorbed but that any drowning bees can escape.

Let's make 2016 the YEAR of the BEE!
We look forward to new bee courses this year and new bee equipment at the store in Centurion.

We love to offer beekeepers new and established good equipment and great service! It allows you to give the bees the best they can get! It all means better happier bees and more honey.

If you aren't already following our FaceBook page. We do post bee related articles and news there that is unique to that format. Don't miss out

Got a farm and growing crops? Bees can pollinate your crops and usually contribute to more than 50% of the pollination of most crops over and above that of butterflies and flies.

We will be posting to FaceBook the actual pollination effects bees will have on crops in South Africa and elsewhere over the next week. Be sure to visit our FaceBook page for that info.

Here's a challenge: Which crop enjoys 300% increase in yields when 2x hives per hectare are utilised when flowering takes place?
Queen bee in hive
Can you spot her? The queen bee [above] is the only fertile female in the Scutellata colony and therefore the only bee that can properly lay eggs of either male or female workers.

We will be sending you tips, articles and news about beekeeping that will help you to better understand the benefits of bees for all of us!

Our recommended first steps are that you get hold of the blue book, Beekeeping in South Africa which is available on our website by mail order or if you collect in Centurion.

Catch up on maintenance and harvesting from the holidays.

As late rains have come in South Africa it may assist bees to forage for a late honey harvest.

There are still a few trees and flowers that bloom this time of year in South Africa so take advantage where you can by paying attention to flowering eucalyptus / blue gum type trees.

Northern Hemisphere:
Focus on preparing for the coming spring season.

Ensure you have sites with permission from farmers/landowners to place your bees on if you don't keep bees on your own property.

You may also want to plant bee friendly flowers like sweet basil, rosemary and borage. All of which can also be used in cooking...
