Bee News Buzz
We close on 24 December until 4 January 2016. Orders received during this festive time of Christmas and New Years will only be processed in the new year.

As the year approaches its end we would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Amazing New Year for 2016!
We hold our last bee course for the year this Saturday!

Take some time over the holidays to discuss the power of bees and how they contribute to our very existence as consumers. They have a vast effect on our food production both directly and indirectly through diversity and the provision of flora for our fauna.

Coffee, Mango, Macadamia nuts, Avocado, sunflower and tomatoes all have tremendous increases in yields and quality when bee colonies are placed nearby to increase pollination! Food production could be vastly improved for farms, household, cash crops and on a national scale by utilising the humble - the hand of mother nature.

Can you spot them? The queen bee cells [above] iare the only fertile female in the Scutellata colony and therefore the only bee that can properly lay eggs of either male or female workers. The Cape worker is reproductive capable raising concern over the relocation into Scutellata territory!

  First Steps
    Keep reading articles, bee books
We will be sending you tips, articles and news about beekeeping that will help you to better understand the benefits of bees for all of us!

Our recommended first steps are that you get hold of the blue book, Beekeeping in South Africa which is available on our website by mail order or if you collect in Centurion. *15 in stock*

Southern Hemisphere: It's peak season for the beekeeper with holidays coming up too! Take advantage of seasonal highs in pollen and nectar production by the summer flowers and crops and inspect your colonies for harvesting beautiful raw honey!

It makes life a lot easier if you use a centrifuge or honey extractor to extract honey from the comb. The bees don't have to rebuild the honeycomb before being able to store it again. They simply have to repair and refill the honeycomb cells that were emptied out after the extraction process is completed.

It would be a good idea to add a new empty super to any colonies that you are harvesting from. Bees tend to leave full supers uncapped if there is still a very strong nectar flow on. This gives the impression that there is no need for removing and harvesting the honey as it is yet to be capped - not ripe nor ready for harvesting - however this is usually due to the fact that the bees have no other room to store the influx of strong nectar so they do not complete the final stage of capping the cells.

The solution: Add an empty super or deep super for the bees to start afresh and build new honeycomb and new storage for placing the nectar and soon you will find that uncapped but fully built or drawn out comb is capped and sealed, ripe for harvesting

Northern Hemisphere it's cooling down. Autumn is here.

Make preparations to start protecting your colonies from the coming cold. Find late blooming flower locations to harness a last minute honey harvest.

Refrain from harvesting any honey at this time. The honey that is in the hives should remain as their food for the wintering period. Or you could feed your bees regularly with sugar water.
