With the honey you harvested over the season what do you do with granulated or crystallised honey or extra honey?

P.S. Raw unheated honey will tend to granulate during cold months!

The simple way to make it liquid again is to put the jar or container into a warm pot of water and let it sit for 10 min.

Honey that was not flash heated will granulate or crystallise if it is not eaten before that time comes...

Got plans for Spring - Start now!
With as little as two months to go for southern hemisphere spring season, the flowers are coming!
  • Plant bee friendly plants soon.
  • Sweat peas, lavender fine, borage, sweet basil and more
  • Collect empty super chambers and check for wax moth
  • Clean and repair any damaged frames
  • Fix wire and add wax strips or wax sheets to frames
  • Repair broken catch boxes or nuc boxes
What about harvesting honey
  • Any time it is middle of winter is not a good time to harvest honey
  • Every time the propolis seals are broken it creates gaps in the internal climate of the hive
  • Prevent over inspecting bee hive colonies during cold spells
  • Rather count the number of bees coming back from the field from about 10am when it is above 13 degrees celsius - if it's over 100 bees a minute then there's a strong colony
  • Colony counting is a non-invasive inspection method whereby counting the returning field bees in a given time, like 60 secs - provides good data to ascertain the health of the colony.
  • Under 80 bees/ minute shows a concern and raises a flag unless the weather is bad or temperature is below 13 degrees Celsius.
  • If the weather is poor with lots of rain or below 13 degrees the bees won't be active and wont venture out of the hive
What plants start flowering in South Africa soon?
  • Some blue gum / Eucalyptus
  • Aloe Davyana - excellent pollen source and colonies expand
Our next Easy Buzzing Beekeeping Course is on 30 July in Midrand.

This course will be facilitated by Cillene & Martin with practical hive session after lunch.

For anyone who is about to start beekeeping here's some things to consider:
  • It's really awesome working with bees
  • It's scary working with bees
  • But it's honestly amazing!
  • Care for them and they provide honey, wax and other products of the hive
  • A starter kit is about R3400 all-in!
  • A bee course is R850
  • You kuier lekker met die Bye!
So treat your hubby, loved one or friend with a beekeeping gift today!

Got a farm and growing crops? Bees can pollinate your crops and usually contribute to more than 50% of the pollination of most crops over and above that of butterflies and flies.

We will be posting to FaceBook the actual pollination effects bees will have on crops in South Africa and elsewhere over the next week. Be sure to visit our FaceBook page for that info.

Here's a challenge: Which crop enjoys 300% increase in yields when 2x hives per hectare are utilised when flowering takes place?
Queen bee in hive
Can you spot her? The queen bee [above] is the only fertile female in the Scutellata colony and therefore the only bee that can properly lay eggs of either male or female workers.

Over the course of the next 6 weeks we will be sending you tips, articles and news about beekeeping that will help you to better understand the benefits of bees for all of us!
We will be sending you tips, articles and news about beekeeping that will help you to better understand the benefits of bees for all of us!

Our recommended first steps are that you get hold of the blue book, Beekeeping in South Africa which is available on our website by mail order or if you collect in Centurion.

Southern Hemisphere:
As winter carries on everything is cold! The bees are not likely to fly out unless the weather is above 13 degrees Celsius.

Avoid opening hives often and during cold fronts as that breaks the propolis seal that keeps the hive air tight.

Work on getting apiary sites for the coming spring time by talking with farmers, friends and property owners to move bees to in the August.

Northern Hemisphere:
Focus on preparing for harvest time. If you have had low rain and good spring flowers then look forward to a good honey harvest.

Using an extractor will mean you increase the efficiency of your apiary as the bees will very quickly take advantage of just refilling the honey comb on the super frames instead of having to rebuild the honeycomb from scratch before being able to fill it with nectar again.
