With the honey you harvested over the season what do you do with granulated or crystallised honey or extra honey?

P.S. Bee WARE is running a Mead Making course which will add a whole new dimension to your beekeeping experience!

The history of mead may go back more than 8,000 years. The oldest known meads were created on the Island of Crete. Wine had not yet been created

Cillene will train this course @ the Centurion Shop.

Got excess honey?
With as little as 2-3kg of honey, a batch of 20L of mead can be made.
  • Add water and some special ingredients and wait...
  • Voila! You get a magical tasting drink to enjoy at dinner or a braai!
  • We take through all of the necessary steps!
  • Cillene will train you both days!
What about alcohol content?
  • Alcohol content varies from 8% -20%
  • We teach you how to manage the alcohol level of your mead
  • Light and dark colours depend on the type of honey used
Who should come on the Mead Course?
  • Wine lovers
  • Honey lovers
  • Tinkerers looking for a new hobby
  • Couples looking for an activity to do together
  • Handmade craftsman
  • Artisan brewers
  • You...
Our next Making Mead course is on 16 April & 14 May both being half-day sessions & gets you started with the art of making Mead!

Got a farm and growing crops? Bees can pollinate your crops and usually contribute to more than 50% of the pollination of most crops over and above that of butterflies and flies.

We will be posting to FaceBook the actual pollination effects bees will have on crops in South Africa and elsewhere over the next week. Be sure to visit our FaceBook page for that info.

Here's a challenge: Which crop enjoys 300% increase in yields when 2x hives per hectare are utilised when flowering takes place?
Queen bee in hive
Can you spot her? The queen bee [above] is the only fertile female in the Scutellata colony and therefore the only bee that can properly lay eggs of either male or female workers.

Southern Hemisphere:
As winter edges closer make preparations for

Consider moving your bees from gullies and low lying areas to higher ground and into sunny spots so they can have some warmth during the day.

For really cold areas, consider insulation and feeding your bees. We use feeding frames and entrance feeders to help with this. Both are available from the Bee WARE shop.

Northern Hemisphere:
Focus on preparing for the coming spring season.

Plot and plan your harvesting cycle for the coming season.

Ensure you have sites with permission from farmers/landowners to place your bees on if you don't keep bees on your own property.

You may also want to plant bee friendly flowers like sweet basil, lavender fine, rosemary and borage. All of which can also be used in cooking...
