Catch bees now!

We just went up to our big apiary site in Mpumalanga. The flowers have been blossoming there for a couple of weeks already! Everything is green! It's totally Spring...

Our apiary visit was smack in the middle of the crop flowering season so bees were grafting hard. We had placed 10 empty bee hives there at the end of August and with our visit last week we found 8 of them were buzzing with bee colonies.

Imagine catching bees at no cost except the purchase of bee hives or catch boxes... Whatever beekeeping work you do now will reap massive reward in 2011. Depending on your local floral quality you could most likely harvest before the end of 2010! We are looking at a full harvest in December with the bee colonies we just captured.

Experts's advice

To catch bees now is fairly simple with the right beekeeping equipment. You could use catch boxes which don't have a high cost so you can purchase a set up of say 3-5 for a hobby beekeeper and then 5-15 for a small bee farming operator. We use 30 at a time building towards our commercial apiary of 1000 bee hives over 3 years.

You can also opt to use a complete bee hive however it is not recommended to place the super chamber on the brood chamber when you set up the trap for colonies. You can purchase a complete bee hive and set the super away in the garage until the brood chamber has bees and they have filled 8 frames in the brood chamber.

Either way, the catch boxes and complete bee hives available from us are treated with a special bee attractant that acts like a magnet to trekking bee swarms.

George Hyland recently called to say, "I bought 2 hives from you on the Sunday and by Monday midday they were full!"

Beekeeping course

We will be running another excellent Easy buzzing bee course in October on Saturday the 21st at 8h00 until 16h30.

Copies of the Beekeeping in South Africa "blue book" will be available at R260 for easy reference after completing the bee course.

Any beekeeping supplies are also available for purchase prior to the bee course and can be collected on the day or beforehand.

Although the first Spring rains haven't come yet we witnessed a very strong bloom this year! It is a good sign for the 2010 honey harvest as it too should be strong.

Make the most of it by catching bees and splitting the honey bee colonies you already have.

Some beekeepers are actually full time farmers or land owners that want to keep bees... What plants are bee friendly?

You can plant fruit trees like the avocado, oranges, lemon, litchi and tomato.

Alternate bee friendly plants are borage, lavender and rosemary.

Other trees and plants that are excellent wild flora are gum trees, bottlebrush and Acacia karee.
