Summer in the Southern Hemisphere!

Help with keeping bees
Lots of people are getting into beekeeping whether it is as a hobby or more serious. Either way, we are here to support the growing interest in beekeeping in South Africa and even around the world.

What have we got?
We have managed to secure about 30 copies of the Blue book also called Beekeeping in South Africa after months without any copies being available countrywide. It is really first come first served as this is a very small quantity that has been made available to us.

As the post office remains on strike, despite 10 weeks of no service, we are unable to post any mail orders. We are able to courier however to most places in South Africa. This courier service is available over 2-4 working days but we do require a physical address.

The courier fees are more expensive however than the post office fees so please note that it will cost at least R100 to courier the books. We could also bundle the book with other items into a box for a mere R20 - R40 more or so depending on the size of the parcel!

Alternatively, come collect a copy from the Bee WARE Retail shop in Centurion, Eco Square on Witch Hazel Avenue.

Operating hours: 09h00 -13h00 & 14h00 -16h00 weekdays! Sat 9-12!

We also have our Practical Beekeeping ebook available via the internet if you prefer.

Let's talk bee training!

We will be training again in November on the 8th with our Easy Buzzing Beginner Beekeeping course taking place in Midrand.

I am in the UK visiting the Honey Show here which is very exciting!

We only have 2 more bee courses planned for 2014 so be sure to get involved and keep in mind some end of year gifts for friends or family.

Our bee training is set to kick start beginner beekeepers with theory in the morning about the management, tools, equipment and industry to be followed by a full afternoon of live demonstration with our apiary while we look for the queen bee and everyone gets a up close and personal experience with at least 2 of our bee colonies!

With bee season on, we kick into full education and training mode with regards to keeping bees and beekeeping! With that being said our next Easy Buzzing Beginner's bee course runs in Cape Town. It is followed by our next course in Midrand, JHB on the 8th November.  Follow the JHB Bee Courses

Queen bee in hive
Can you spot her? The queen bee [above] is the only fertile female in the Scutellata colony and therefore the only bee that can properly lay eggs of either male or female workers. The Cape worker is reproductive capable raising concern over the relocation into Scutellata territory!

  First Steps
    Keep reading articles, bee books
We will be sending you tips, articles and news about beekeeping that will help you to better understand the benefits of bees for all of us!
Our recommended first steps are that you get hold of the blue book, Beekeeping in South Africa which is available on our website by mail order or if you collect in Centurion.

Southern Hemisphere:  Summer is here and so are the bees!
We continue to harvest honey and beeswax from the apiary.

Pay special attention to harvesting honey with an extractor as it takes only 5-10 days for the bees to refill the empty honeycomb cells again whilst there is still a supply of nectar!

If you cut out the honeycomb and crush it the bees take from 6-10 weeks for them to rebuild and fill again! Do the sums and you will find it much better for you and the bees to be harvesting and extracting with a honey extractor!

Northern Hemisphere keep colonies going with the nectar flows by moving your bees to seasonal crops and orchards that flower in the spring and summer periods.

It is starting to get cooler now with high temperatures in low 20s or high teens! It would be good practice to keep from harvesting honey in the hive now unless you have exceptionally good nectar sources available for your bees.
