Most crops are off season now. Notably, the aloes are in season! We travelled up to Tzaneen area over the long weekend & saw these aloes everywhere.

Aloes are useful for numerous reasons. Here's a few points to consider:

Beekeepers, both small and large commercial operators, will move bees to the aloes to bulk them while making sure they survive the cold winter temperatures.

Honey bees will bulk up over this period as the queen bee will lay workers while there is a nectar flow. Aside from having food to survive over the harsh winter nights, the aloes also make the bees more
aggressive.

The bees build on the aloes & this can be used to take advantage of the spring nectar flow but can also be used in order to make splits of your hives in August!

Queen bee in hive
Can you spot her? The queen bee [above] is the only fertile female in the Scutellata colony and therefore the only bee that can properly lay eggs of either male or female workers.
