Yes, I realize that sounds overplayed or oversimplified, but it is true. To successfully work with Enochian, regardless of what you believe, all you have to do is shift your consciousness. The Enochian spirits were seen by the two fountainheads of the tradition, Dee and Kelly, to be angels. Given the fact that this was the latter part of the 16th century, we can see why. During that time, Christianity was on the rise, along with the Renaissance. Many significant events happened during those times that have largely shaped how we look at the Abrahamic system today.

Angels being humans with wings? Yep, that’s an idea largely shaped by the Renaissance. The King James version of the Bible was not made yet, but was on the horizon. In England the persecution of Catholics by Protestant was forming, and John Milton’s influential paradise cycle had not come into being, but its fertile soil was already in place.

These examples illustrate some of the major religious and spiritual themes that were unfolding all across Europe. Don’t forget that Martin Luther was only a few decades before the reception of Enochian. Because of all this, it is easy to see why angels (and Christianity) were in the air, and when you consider Dee’s devout nature, it becomes clear why they were seen as angels.

We no longer live in those times though, and updating our thinking to reflect that should be paramount. After having spent decades working with Enochian spirits, I can tell you that they are not only or specifically angels, as I was led to believe. They are more than that, and to just call them angels does them a large disservice. The best way to think of them that I have found comes from esoteric Eastern traditions of thought, such as the various kingdoms of nature, and in this case specifically, the Devic kingdom.
