A RUMMAGE SALE FOR LEAF-PEEKERS |
Seasoned aspen leaf viewers know the third week of September usually brings the crescendo of color in Colorado. And that’s why the tiny burg of Gold Hill schedules its annual Bake and Treasure Sale for that weekend.
Elon Bar-Evan, the organizer of this year’s sale, says a round-trip route from Denver to Gold Hill through Central City and back to Denver through Boulder will take you through some of the Peak-to-Peak Highway’s most breathtaking fall foliage.
“From Black Hawk to Estes Park, the serpentine highway meanders through valleys and skims the top of ridges, taking the most scenic route at every turn,” he writes. “Take Colorado 119 from Black Hawk north to Nederland, then follow Colorado 72 to Raymond. From here, proceed on Colorado 7 past the 14,255-foot Longs Peak to Estes Park. Quaking aspens pop up in surprising places along the entire route.”
As for the deals, Bar-Evan says estate-sale-quality merchandise is offered -- “no junk.” Last year, he scored an antique velvet couch for $30.
He, of course, didn’t have to schlep that couch back to Denver on one of the steepest roads in North America. We city folk might want to focus on smaller items and on the “Bake” portion of the Bake and Treasure Sale. The town’s 200 or so residents have been baking up a storm in preparation for the sale, which runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Gold Hill Elementary School. (If you find the town, you’ll find the school.)
For more information, and to learn what will happen if it’s snowing on Saturday morning, go to http://goldhilltown.com/category/bake-and-treasure-sale/, call Bar-Evan at 303-317-3303 or send an email to treasure@goldhilltown.com.
Money earned through the rummage sale, by the way, pays for the town’s Web site and for its fire mitigation efforts, among other things.

This is also a big week for consignment and fund-raising sales of gently used children’s clothing and other gear, so let’s get right to it.
