Autumn amusements and fall festivities

Feel that morning chill? It must be time to carve some pumpkins, pull on a sweater, pick up a book and celebrate autumn. Here are few warm, neighborly places offering events and bargains that can supply the pumpkins, sweaters and books to help get you into the cozy mood of season.

First, some books
Play with Ernest, the thrift shop cat, nibble on snacks and let the little ones listen to stories during the Halloween Book Sale at Cajun’s Closet, a thrift shop benefiting the Cat Care Society at 5707 W. Sixth Ave., 303-202-0455, www.cajunscloset.org. Mass market paperbacks are five for $1, trade paperbacks are two for $1; hardbacks are $1 apiece and children’s books are 10 cents apiece. The sale runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25.

Cajun’s Closet, which recently won the “Best of Lakewood Award” in the Thrift Shop category is on the Sixth Avenue frontage road between Sheridan and Wadsworth boulevards. To get there, exit Sheridan north and take the first left.

Jeffco Library offers Whale of Book Sale
Bibliophiles might want to join the Jefferson County Library Foundation in time to attend the members-only preview sale for Jeffco Library’s Fall Whale of Used Book Sale, 6 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 15200 W. Sixth Ave., Golden. Members get first crack at more than 95,000 books, audiobooks, CDs, videos, maps and records. The public sale continues at the fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, and Saturday, Oct. 24, and winds up from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24. Bring your little pumpkins to Tagawa’s Pumpkin Festival

Parents and children will find an educational carnival of activities from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, and Sunday, Oct. 25, at the Pumpkin Festival at Tagawa Gardens, 7711 S Parker Road, Aurora, 303-690-4722, www.tagawagardens.com.

Nine dollars per child ages 2 through teen (under 2s get in free) and $3 per adult includes cooking and tasting demonstrations, sing-alongs, balloon artistry, railway displays, face painting, an obstacle course, pumpkin decorating, a petting zoo and more – and one dollar of each admission goes to the Food Bank of the Rockies SHARE Basket Project.

 

Bargain bins offer good stuff at two bucks

Act II consignment store is nearly ready to move a couple doors down Littleton Boulevard, but it’s impossible to move everything, so some great items have been marked for clearance. Starting at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, the bargain bins will be filled with clothing, shoes, purses and jewelry, with each item priced at $2. Act II is at 1226 W. Bring an item of nonperishable food for the Food Bank of the Rockies to Act II during October or November and receive one Bargain Buck per item.

Feed the birds

All seeds, suet and nuts are 15 percent off, and you can buy ahead for the entire winter during the Fall Sale through Oct. 31 at the Wild Bird Center, 1685 S. Colorado Blvd., 303-758-7575. The south Denver center also offers a 5 percent rebate program.

Quilt Museum brings display to Echter’s

The Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum brings a juried exhibit of quilts – ranging from heirloom to contemporary pieces -- to Echter’s Garden Center, from 5150 Garrison St., Arvada, 720- 863-4492, from Friday, Oct. 23, through Sunday, Oct. 25.
