It’s November, and that means merchants all over North America are replacing black and orange displays with red and green ones (with a few small blue and white displays tucked into the corners). So just to help you get reoriented, here’s a rundown on shopping festivities for the first week of the holiday season.

Sweeten a soldier’s day with almond toffe
Enstrom Candies wants to help Coloradans give a bit of home to members of the armed forces by paying the shipping for any order that’s going to an APO or FPO address.

“We started offering free shipping to military personnel in July. We just thought it would be a nice gesture,” said Jamie Enstrom, whose grandfather started Enstrom Candies in Grand Junction in 1960.

The offer is available at all four metro-area Enstrom outlets: Cherry Creek North, 201 University Blvd., 303-322-1005; Arvada, 6770 W. 52nd Ave., 303-215-9905; and at the Enstrom holiday season kiosks in the Park Meadows and FlatIron malls.

Brighten a soldier’s home with a Christmas tree
Last year, Tagawa Gardens and its customers presented 238 Christmas trees to military families and troops through the Christmas Spirit Foundation’s Trees for Troops program. This year’s drive kicks off Saturday, Nov. 7, and runs through Dec. 6. Each $20 donation presented at Tagawa provides a fresh-cut tree. Tagawa is at 7711 S. Parker Road, Centennial, 303-690-4722, www.tagawagardens.com.

At these prices, you can light more than one candle
Boutique Judaica’s 32st Anniversary Sale runs through Sunday, Nov. 15. Prices on everything are reduced by 10 percent, with the exception of mezuzah parchments. Get a head start on shopping for Hanukkah, which starts Dec. 11, by checking out what's new in gifts, toys, wrapping paper, menorahs, candles, books and dreidels. The store is at 5052 E. Hampden Ave., 303-757-1317. This is an unadvertised sale. You’ll need to mention it at checkout; discounts will not be taken automatically.

  Walk this way

From Wednesday, Nov. 4, through Saturday, Nov. 7, you'll find a storewide 10 percent discount at the annual Holiday Walk at The Lark gift shop, 1219 E. Fourth Ave., 303-744-7464.

Thursday

Madison Exchange Sample Sale, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 5, Holiday Inn Select, 455 S. Colorado Blvd. Free.
Sales reps don’t like to make much of a fuss when they sell their samples because they don’t like to undercut their clients, the retailers. So this semiannual sale is a pretty low-key affair. But I’ll tell you this: You’ll find great prices on some of the best lines in sportswear, sporting goods, apparel and equipment for men, women and children. Go! You’ll be glad.

Thursday through Saturday

Colorado Potters Guild Fall Pottery Show and Sale, 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, and Saturday, Nov. 7, Plymouth Congregational Church, 3501 S. Colorado Blvd. Free.

Thursday night’s reception kicks off this extremely popular event, which features works by 40 Colorado potters – including Trudy Strauss, whose Judaic pieces were recently spotlighted in The Intermountain Jewish News. For more information, call 303-733-3003 or go to www.coloradopotters.org.

Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary Holiday Gift Fair (known to many as the Doll Tea), 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6 and Saturday, Nov. 7; Colorado Community Church, 3651 S. Colorado Blvd. (one block south of Hampden). Adults, $5, children 10 and younger, free.
Features of this popular annual event include a silent auction and entry into a wonderland of dolls, miniatures and model trains. As you shop for toys, gifts, homemade gourmet food, quilts, hand-dressed dolls, ornaments and more, you provide funds to clothe needy schoolchildren in head-to-toe new outfits.
