DENVER SPIRIT PERMEATES BURBS

My daughter, a proud central Denverite, was raised in a neighborhood where she needed to walk no more than four blocks to reach a playground, an ice cream store and a public library. During her childhood, she sometimes felt the scorn of suburban friends who believed anyone who didn’t attend school in the Cherry Creek district was somehow inferior.

When she was about 12, she responded quietly by plastering a bumper sticker on her skateboard that read, “Go back to your suburb.”

The development of the Vistas at Park Meadows and the just-opened Streets at Southglenn, at South University Boulevard and Arapahoe Road, in Centennial, marks a new suburban embrace of the city lifestyle, with trees and sidewalks lining streets of one-story shops.
The independent local shops at the redeveloped Southglenn Mall are quirky enough to please any proud central Denverite. All my daughter had to do was wait; the suburbs have gone back to the city.

PHAT DEALS FROM STREETS AT SOUTHGLENN SHOPS

*Today’s young skateboarder can check out the goods at the new 720 Board Shop, 720-283-0112, www.720boardshop.com, in the area of the Streets at Southglenn near the fountain in front of the Hollywood Theaters. This is the second 720 Board Shop, an expansion from the first, in Parker.

“A locally owned shop provides the community a place to shop for their gear that offers extremely high-level customer service – plus, we beat the chains on prices,” said owner Travis Idler.

Idler buys gear and supplies for snow, skate and wake boarders from local vendors whenever he can, including Denver’s Eyedentity Threads Urban Clothing and KRIMINALapparel and Bing Energy Drinks. He also uses local contractors to produce the line of hats, shirts and hoodies that he sells under the 720 Board Shop label.

And deals? For followers of Best Colorado Deals, Idler is extending his opening week specials through Sunday, Sept. 13. Sandals are buy one pair, get one pair free; all hats are half price, and a free T-shirt comes with selected sunglass purchases. Just mention you learned about it through Best Colorado Deals.

*Peggy Gulam established Chrysalis, 303-658-0056, chrysalis-eco-chic.com, as an “eco-boutique,” complete with certification that every handbag, shoe, accessory and item of women’s apparel sold in her store is produced under eco-friendly and socially responsible conditions – either in the United States or from guaranteed fair trade sources. Labels include Sust, Kelly B, Sita, Edun, Indigenous Fair Trade, Eco-Centric, AC, Soldat, ecoskin, and locally made English Retreads and TraSH Bagz handbags.

*Laura Li, who just transplanted Irresistibles, 303-660-8118, shopirrestibles.com, from Castle Rock, where she started it 11 years ago, says she was attracted to the Streets at Southglenn because she likes “how they laid the area out with all the boutiques together. It makes it feel like a neighborhood. I don’t like being in a mall next to a Banana Republic. I think outdoor malls are the new trend.” Li’s highly individualized selection of women’s clothing and accessories includes items from Hanky Panky, Nic + Zoe; Aventura, Cubism, Worn, Glima and SPANX. Although she doesn’t run sales, Li says her store always features a sale rack.

Other independent local retailers at the Streets at Southglenn include:

*Sole Food shoes for women and children, 303-703-3855, solefoodshoes.com.
*Kismet Jewelry and Accessories, 720-335-6496, www.kismetaccessories.com, an expansion of the popular Highland neighborhood boutique.
*Andrew’s Jewelers, 303-233-0066, www.andrewsjewelrystore.com.

*Sous le Lit women’s shoes and accessories, 303-455-1622, www.SousleLit.com, which joins the shop’s popular outlets in Old Town Littleton and Denver’s Highland neighborhood.
