POWERMOD: TO THE RESCUE

With man-made or natural disasters occurring unexpectedly at all corners of earth, there has been a sharp demand for dependable portable energy sources that can make rescue efforts a lot easier and more successful. Solar landfills- the future?
A Georgia, U.S. based landfill site has been transformed from an operating landfill that has reached capacity into a commercial scale, solar energy generating facility. A key part of this development is the use of an Exposed Geomembrane Solar Cover (EGSC) system. This technology combines an enhanced final cover anchoring system and thin film photovoltaic solar panel attached to a geomembrane. The result? An integrated final landfill cover system that allows a landfill owner to close a landfill but generate renewable electrical power.

How would nature do it?
Researchers at the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland may be discovering the answer, thanks to advancing solar and 3D printing technologies. They have developed some very decorative prototypes of what they are calling “energy harvesting trees”. The tiny leaves generate and store solar energy and can be used to power small appliances and mobile devices. They flourish indoors and outdoors and can also harvest kinectic energy from wind and temperature changes in the surrounding environment.
